Day 272 | Natalie

Salem, Oregon 08.20.11
Nikon D3 – Sigma 50mm f/1.4 HSM
Aperture: f/2.2 – Exposure: 1/125s – ISO Speed: 1250

A few days ago I got to chat with a former bride through the glory that is Facebook chat. Off topic, but I miss the glory days of AOL when everyone was online and chatting 24/7. Facebook sort of forces a lot of people to be reachable via their shody interface, and most of them I think just haven’t figured out how to turn it off. Anyways I do miss some of my Portland people and I especially miss the girls from the charity group we used to volunteer our time to. Which incidentally is where we met Natalie. Weddings are definitely more special if we’re able to have a friendship connection with our clients. This was one of my favorite images from that day. Simple but beautiful.

Day 271 | approaching

Chicago, Illinois 10.27.08
Nikon D3 – Nikon 24mm f/3.5D PC
Aperture: f/3.5 – Exposure: 1s – ISO Speed: 100

Pretty much anytime you are using a tilt/shift lens and combining it with trains you’re going to get a great miniature effect. Of course if it’s the end of October in Chicago and you want to get this shot at night you are going to have to brave some pretty frigid weather. This particular night I was out with a couple of friends doing the long exposure thing. I love doing night photography, and even though it’s always hard to overcome laziness or simply staying in and staying warm I’m always glad when I go.

Day 270 | dragon of yreka

Yreka, California 11.12.11
Nikon D700 – Sigma 50mm f/1.4 HSM
Aperture: f/2.8 – Exposure: 1/30s – ISO Speed: 200

We’ve driven from Portland to San Diego more times than made sense economically. Each time we seemed to slip through Yreka at the worst time for lighting, which was always a shame because there is a fantastic dragon sculpture named Priscilla a few miles north of the town. Finally the very last time we were headed that route we hit Yreka at right before sunset so I got my Priscilla shot.

Day 269 | South Street Power Plant

Providence, Rhode Island 08.26.07
Fuji S5 Pro – Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G DX
Aperture: f/10 – Exposure: 30s – ISO Speed: 100

We kept driving past this power plant on a trip we took Rhode Island in 2007. Only I didn’t have a tripod with me. Ultimately I thought it was cool enough to break down and buy a cheap tripod to capture the shot. This story is pretty boring, but the moral is that cheap tripods suck, and a sturdy pair of legs do wonders in image stabilization.

Day 268 | Crystal in the shadows

La Mesa, California 12.29.07
Fuji S5 Pro – Nikon 85mm f/1.4D
Aperture: f/3.5 – Exposure: 1/60s – ISO Speed: 400

Yesterday I had the pleasant surprise of running into Crystal, who is Jessica’s sister. Meeting Crystal was pretty much the same story as meeting Jessica- only after that I unfortunately never saw Crystal again (well until today). But she remembered us, and much like Jessica was completely warm and sweet. Nice people these sisters. This particular photo was taken at that post Christmas party at Jessica’s place, and it was actually a bit underexposed but I really liked her expression and brought it back a bit in post.

Day 267 | this place that is my home I cannot stay

Chicago, Illinois 09.11.09
Nikon D3 – Nikon 24mm f/3.5D PC
Aperture: f/3.5 – Exposure: 1.3s – ISO Speed: 200

This was the one of the last long exposures I took in Chicago before I moved to Portland. It seems like a million years ago. Towards the end of my stint in Chicago I couldn’t wait to leave, it all just felt weird to me. Looking back now Chicago felt more like home to me than Portland ever did. The Cloud Gate sculpture in Millennium Park is the subject of millions of photos, and quite a few of my own. The other night I posted a couple of photos, one of the San Diego skyline and the other of a lone fisherman at night motion blurred on a pier. I thought the fisherman was an infinitely more interesting shot than the cityscape, but everyone is excited about that shot. I really enjoy night photography, but sometimes it’s difficult to really make it interesting when you are tethered to a tripod.

Day 266 | sold

Portland, Oregon 07.07.10
Nikon D3 – Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G VR (120mm)
Aperture: f/3.5 – Exposure: 1/160s – ISO Speed: 800

There is a bridge that we went over the other day that has some pretty cool graffiti under it. Graffiti fascinates me, mostly because I can’t read it nor can I usually figure out how they physically got to a lot of the places it is, and had time to do it presumably at night. Freight trains are great for graffiti, but I still do not understand how they have time to do such intricate work. Take the skull on this car for instance. How did they even get to the upper portions of it? Train cars are not that short. Total unsolved mystery stuff for me.

Day 265 | men of tin

Chicago, Illinois 02.15.08
Fuji S5 Pro – Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6
Aperture: f/8 – Exposure: 13s – ISO Speed: 100

Chicago has a park called “Oz Park” that has statues of many of the characters in the movie the Wizard of Oz. The biggest disappointment in the park is that there are no flying monkey statues. How they could overlook flying monkeys is beyond me. I saw a clip of the Wizard of Oz the other night that made me think of this shot. It was really cold that night.

Day 264 | Andrew

Evanston, Illinois 12.06.09
Nikon D3 – Nikon 50mm f/1.4D
Aperture: f/1.4 – Exposure: 1/50s – ISO Speed: 4500

I met Andrew on Livejournal a few months before I moved to Chicago the second time around. We’ve since lost touch since I moved, but I always really enjoyed his company. He’s a very soft spoken genuinely warm and nice person. These aren’t traits I see in guys very often, which is why I think I generally prefer the company of women. I’m not saying Andrew is ultra feminine, just that if more men had personality traits like Andrew’s I’d probably have more male friends. This shot was taken at a birthday celebration on a cold December night in the northern Chicago suburb of Evanston. I particularly love the weird colors you find at dive bars from the combination of neon alcohol signs, pool lights, and colored string lights draped across the ceiling.

Day 263 | distace

Chicago, Illinois 04.13.08
Nikon D3 – Nikkor 20mm f/2.8AF
Aperture: f/8 – Exposure: 1/800s – ISO Speed: 200

On a cold day in the beginning of April Melissa and I walked over to the Canal street market in Chicago. We were there with Archie FlorCruz whose website I had actually been following for quite awhile before we moved back in Chicago. I always like the vast empty feeling of this photo.

Day 262 | The Farming Settlement

somewhere in central California 03.14.11
Nikon D700 – Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6D (90mm)
Aperture: f/5.6 – Exposure: 1/60s – ISO Speed:200

I actually thought I had lost this shot, somehow the processed jpeg never got saved, but I still had the RAW file so I re-processed it as close as I could to the original. I’m not sure exactly where it was taken, somewhere south of Sacramento as we headed back to Portland from San Diego on interstate 5. There is no real deep meaning behind it, I just liked the colors of the sky.

Day 261 | fractured identity

Chicago, Illinois 06.09.07
Nikon D200 – Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8G DX (48mm)
Aperture: f/2.8 – Exposure: 1/50s – ISO Speed: 100

The first year Melissa and I moved back to Chicago we arrived in the winter, and exploring wasn’t all that fun. As soon as the summer arrived we spent more time venturing out and doing random things. This shot was of a statue at an art festival in the Lincoln Park area that we took a train in from our place at Oak Park to meet some people. I really didn’t take a ton of photos that day, and this is the only one of the art that grabbed my attention. I liked the fractured self representation. It says to me that we are really two selves.

Day 260 | Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree National Forest, California 10.06.09
Nikon D3 – Nikkor 45mm f/2.8D PC Micro
Aperture: f/2.8 – Exposure: 1/800s – ISO Speed: 200

I have a new idea for a blog in the works, and I think I may be using a version of this shot I took in Joshua Tree on either the splash page or a a header. I’m not sure if I’m going to continue Daily Mnemonic past a year. We’ll see I guess.

Day 259 | Kimberlee

Portland, Oregon 04.03.11
Nikon D700 – Sigma 50mm f/1.4 HSM
Aperture: f/2 – Exposure: 1/320s – ISO Speed: 500

Fizzle. If I had a word to describe being friends with Kim that is the first word that popped in my mind. I really liked her (and her other half Genna), and for awhile it seemed like we’d all be close. Unfortunately for reasons unknown to me, we kind of all just collectively stopped talking a few months before we moved from Portland.  I’m not exactly sure what happened, perhaps it’s just another one of Portland’s mysteries (I have a few from that town).  But despite the fizzle I don’t have any bad feelings towards those girls.  There is a soft charm to Kim that is hard to describe. She’s quiet and hard to read, but you can’t help but like her.  She also is one of those beautiful people who hate having their photo taken.  Perfect challenge for photographers.  This is my favorite shot of Kim.
